3-10-2013: Report of Seventh Annual Meeting and Onam Celeberation


Mayyanad Sangamam's 7th Annual Meeting on 2-10-2013 was inaugurated by chief guest Dr.B.Ashok IAS (Vice Chancellor, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University).

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Ashok drawing a couple of incidents from the annals of his experiences as an Indian Administrative Service officer showed how one can manage successfully one's own personal as well as career life by employing tact  and presence of mind. This he pointed out is the essence of  peaceful and harmonious living. Well spoken on the birthday of our 'ahimsa vadi' father of the nation, Mahatma  Gandhi.      

The guest of honor  of the day V.Babu Senan (Rtd Deputy General Manager,Reserve Bank of India) in his felicitation speech spoke about some of the veterian Mayyanadians and their exemplary and dedicated contributions to Mayyanad's literary and cultural development.



Secratary Er. Manilal welcomed the gathering. President D.Jayachandran addressed the audience and enumerated the programmes of the Sangamam. Vice President Prof.Rajan K.Ramesh expressed the vote of thanks.

The meeing was followed by cultural programme and a grand Onam sadya.

7. REPORT OF MID-MEET EVENTS

19-6-2013:   MID - MEET  EVENTS

The Executive Committee met twice in the midst to discuss on plans to up the progress of the  Sangamam activities. Accordingly the committee has come up with a plan to bring out a Directory of members of the Mayyanad diaspora in TVM. Prof. Rajan K. Ramesh is the convener of the sub-committee that shall look into its preprartion. The personal particulars,  relating to Mayyanad Origin of the members, will be needed for this. Members will be sent a form to be filled up, along with the invitation for the upcoming Onam Meeting,  to be held  in the second half  of September.





Some member(s) have also expressed a desire to bring out a magazine (on line?) by the Sangam members which shall include news, views,opinions, artcles, literary creations, obituary etc., by members. All writings will have Mayyanad as its central focus. For futher inquiries please contact the Secretary Er. Manilal.

For the information of the Sangamam members,  as requested by Manavaseva and Mayyanad Janasakthi, President D.Jayachandran  has provided an article pertaining to activities of Mayyanad Sangamam to be included in their Bulletin.

6. SAVE MAYYANAD PROJECT- 27.4.2013

27.4.2013:  Umayanalloor Meeting


A co-ordination committee meeting of the representatives of  Jansakthi, Manavasewa, Elder's Forum, Help Foundation, Umayanalloor Paddy Grower's Association, and Mayyanad Sangamam Tvm.,was held at Umayanalloor on 27.4.2013 at 5.30 pm. The meeting discussed among other things:

a.    Encroachment of agricultural land for other purposes,
b.   Dumping of waste on agriculture land and its impact on livestock,
c.   Clandestine  water bottling activity, and depletion of ground water,
d.   Group farming at Umayanalloor Yela.

Mayyanad Sangamam President D.Jayachandran and Vice President  Prof. Rajan K.Ramesh  who attended the meeting  would be part of the advisory committee formed for  achieving the objectives of SAVE MAYYANAD PROJECT.

5. Report of 7.4.2013- Meeting

7.4.2013:  Mayyanad Sangamam Family get together

The chief guest on this day was Dr.S. Mohan (Chair Person,Mayyanad Janasakthi). He inaugurated the functions by lighting of  the lamp. He then narrated the pathetic condition in which the Mayyanad Village Panchayat is being run. He expressed gratitude for the support extended by Mayyanad Sangamam, and requested continued help in the form of assisting them to get past 'red-tapism' at the seat of power, the Secretariat and allied offices, in the capital city.

Dr. Gopimani in his felicitation address advised the members to exercise great caution  in  the fight against corruption as we are dealing with   no ordinary people but with dark elements that have great hold with the powerful Mafia group which now runs the state.
 D.Jayachandran presided over the meeting. The Secretary Er.Manilal welcomed the gathering and the Vice President Prof.Rajan K.Ramesh extended the Vote of thanks. Our ace-singer Amina was given a special felicitation for her contribution    to the Mayyanad Sangamam. The meeting ended with a grand dinner.

4. Medical Camp, Scholarship, Dharna,

Free Medical Camp on  13.1.2013:

A free medical camp was organized at Mayyanad Village by the Mayyanad Sangamam in co-operation with the Mayyanad Elders' Forum and MayyanadJanasakthi. The camp was  conducted  at the Elders'Forum  premises located on the side road in front of  the Mayyanad Govt. Hospital.

Justice Siri Jagan of the Kerala High Court inaugurated the camp. President D.Jayachandran and guest of honor Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran and Bastian Joseph, Vice President, Elders' Forum, spoke on the occasion. Eminent doctors of Mayyanad origin settled in TVM  provided their services at the camp.

The doctors who participated were :

Around  200 patients attended the camp for consultation. The camp functioned from 9.00 AM to 01.00 PM.  The doctors who participated expressed their  satisfaction  at the arrangements, and for providing an   opportunity to serve their own village people. They expressed their eagerness to attend more such camps as it will keep them connected with their ancestral land in a beneficial and meaningful manner.

February, 2013:  Scholarship Distribution

President D.Jayachandran,Secretary Er.Manilal and Vice President Prof. Rajan K.Ramesh attended the annual school function of Mayyanad H.S.S. In this meeting the President distributed the scholarships  instituted by Mayyanad Sangamam, for selected students, under the merit-cum-means scheme, for the year 2012-2013. In his speech D.Jayachandran briefly explained the activities of Mayyanad Sangamam to the audience who later expressed their happiness in their speeches at the initiatives of the Sangamam.

19.3.2013:  The Dharna at Mayyanad Village

The President of Mayyanad Sangamam  D.Jayachandran participated in the dharna organized jointly by the Mayyanad Janasakthi, Mayyanad Elders' Forum, Help Foundation and Umayanalloor Paddy Growers Association. They were protesting the inept handling by corrupt Panchayat officials of a once verdant land. Of the144acre paddy field  24 acre has already been earth filled by land grabbers. Of the 1596 wells only a few now has water in it. Most of the ponds have dried up. Ground water is fast depleting. Farmers are not given any kind of assistance in paddy cultivation. An unauthorised water bottling plant is being  run right on the side of the paddy fields with the connivance of higher officials who are least concerned about the issues that affect the life of ordinary people. The protest was widely covered by the media, that the next day the district collector made a tour of the affected places and ordered remedial measures to be put in place as early as possible.

8.1.2012: New Year Meeting

As suggested by a majority of members the Experiment Without  a Chief Guest continued for the second consecutive session. The meeting was presided over by D.Jayachandran. The gathering sat all together in a semi circle. There was no chief guests speaking on  special topics,  instead each  member  was asked to narrate an interesting episode from their student-days spent at Mayyanad.  A few male members volunteered to do the honor. Some of the narrations managed to elicit some laughter. The ladies and children even after much pampering could not muster enough courage to say something. They can talk in private but not in public view!

Finally the meeting wound its way to the end with a game of tambola, songs rendered by children, and followed by lunch. Prof.Rajan K.Ramesh gave the vote of thanks.

16.8.2012:  Sixth Annual Meeting & Onam celebration

As the experiment without a chief guest did not receive the expected response, M.K.Bhadrakumar,IFS( former diplomat and ambassador)  an expert in China foreign policy was invited as chief guest. The gathering waited in anticipation for the chief guest to arrive. Meanwhile the meeting began with the presidential address by D. Jayachandran.

Then new members made their introductions.  After that the secretary Er. Manilal read out the annual report of  the association's functioning.  The treasurer  Saji Karunakaran read out the audit report.

It was time to discuss the election of new office bearers for the next term. After much conferring among members it was decided that the present team would continue for another two years.

By then news came that the chief guest will not be coming due to some inconvienience on his part. All gathered there felt disappointed. The meeting ended with lucky dips and songs, followed by Onam Sadya.

2. Report of meetings from 8.5.2011 to 9.10.2011

Mayyanad Sangamam institutes scholarships

The Mayyanad Sangamam instituted scholarships for students of Mayyanad H.S.S and Govt,H.S.S, Vellamanal, under the Merit-cum-Means Scheme.  As per the scheme, one student each of class 10, 11 and 12 from Mayyanad H.S.S and from Govt. H.S.S, Vellamanal are to be awarded a scholarship of  Rs. 1000/per annum. Once a student is awarded the scholarship  he/she would continue to receive the same till he/she  becomes eligible for job provided he/she maintains the merit aspect. On the basis of short-listing carried out by school authorities and final  scrutiny  by Mayyanad Sangamam,  Amal Jojo, B.Anjana and Reshma S.Kumar from Govt.H.S.S, and Nina Nasser, Bichin C. Das and Dhanesh from Mayyanad H.S.S. were selected for the scholarships.The President D. Jayachandran distributed the scholarships to the students of  Mayyanad H.S.S at the Annual School Meeting at Mayyanad on 5.3.2011, and to the students of Vellamanal H.S.S the scholarships were distributed at the office of  the Principal in the presence of teachers the very same day.

8.05.2011: Fifth Annual Meeting

The chief guest on this day was Dr.Babu Paul IAS(Rtd.), Former Additional Chief Secretary. Addressing the gathering  Dr.Babu Paul observed that the people of Mayyanad were naturally blessed by hereditary lineage that gave them the vitality to excel in all walks of life.It is said that when Neil Armstrong landed in Moon he found a Keralite restaurant selling appams there! Though it is considered as a joke the fact is that one can find Malayalees all over the World, and especially people from Mayyanad were the first to move out of their village to the State Capital, and then to other states, and  soon to countries in different parts of the world in search of better opportunies. He reminded the contributions of C.V.Kunjuraman, K.Sukumaran,K.Balakrishnan and others as the driving force behind the achievements of people of Mayyanad origin.

D.Jayachandran presided over the function. Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran and Prof. Padmakumari also spoke on the occasion.  Dr.Syamprakash welcomed the gathering and Prof.Rajan K.Ramesh gave the vote of thanks. Children presented their artistic talents. The function concluded with a grand dinner.

9.10.2011:  Onam Meeting

The chief guests of this day were the students from Mayyanad Schools who came over to receive the scholarships for the year 2011-2012. The recipients were invited  along with their parents to attend the Mayyanad Sangamam meeting at TVM.

The President  D. Jayachandran distributed awards to the students to the joyous applause of the gathering. It was a wonderful experience for both the children and the members to meet and  to get to know one another and share news about their village.

As usual children sang songs, and  this was followed by a grand Onam Sadya.

1.Origin of Mayyanad Sangamam - Report of Meetings from 26.1.2006 to 2.1. 2011

Origin  Of Mayyanad Sangamam


Mayyanad Sangamam  is an association of natives hailing from Mayyanad Village in Kollam District and are now domiciled in Thiruvanathapuram, the capital city of Kerala State of India.The association is registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act.1955(Act 12 of 1955).


The Objectives of the association,  as per the By-Law are-

  1. To identify by, and from among the members themselves as one among the children of Mayyanad and   belonging to Mayyanad.
  2. To unite and work on the basis of love and brotherhood for the general welfare of the members of the Sangamam and that of the people of Mayyanad.
  3. To promote and encourage literary, scientific and artistic talents.
  4. To support and participate in charitable missions.
  5. To assemble now and again for the purpose of diffusion of useful knowledge, and for recreational purposes.
The association was registered on Dec.29, 2004 with register no. T3894 under 1955 Act.
